Five qualified young professionals from Great Britain having their lunch at the Ritz Hotel located at Abibu Oki Street in the City Centre of Lagos early in 1963 initiated the Progressive idea of forming a Social Club exclusive for male professionals.
The five young men, then were:
1. Kayode Owodunmi - Chartered Accountant
2. Femi Adewusi - Banker
3. Ade Odedina - Chartered Accountant
4. Dele Alabi - Chartered Accountant
5. Lere Adesina - Lawyer
The conceived idea metamorphosed to the establishment of The City Club Lagos at the inaugural meeting held at the residence of Wole Adebola at 34 Falolu Road, Surulere, Lagos on 18 May 1963. The pioneering elected officers of The City Club were:
1. Wole Adebola - Chairman
2. Ade Odedina - General Secretary
3. Dele Alabi - Honorary Treasurer
4. Lere Adesina - Social Secretary
Apart from the elected officers, those present at the inaugural meeting were Sola Ogunsola, Sagoe, Femi Adewusi, Aig-Imokhuede and Kayode Owodunni. Meeting venues were rotated among members' residences. The meeting focused on two main objectives: - Social interactions and investment cooperation amongst members. The dynamism of the young professionals motivated them to visit the then Oba of Lagos, His Highness Oba Adeyinka Oyekan II to make their prominence felt in the City of Lagos. At this visit, an addressed letter dated 19th September, 1965 was presented to His Highness Oba Adeyinka Oyekan II by the then General Secretary Dele Alabi highlighting the objectives of the Club including the proposal to build a Club House. Late Otunba T. O. S. Benson, SAN laid the foundation Stone of the present Club House on 25th January 1975 and declared it opened on 29th December 1979. The premises of the club is available to members of the public as an event centre.
The City Club Lagos is charity oriented by executing Corporate social responsibility annually to the physically handicapped homes for children in its community in Surulere, Lagos State. Moreover, The City Club is mindful of monetary prudence and it established and operated from 2007 The City Club Investment Group. Constitutionally, the incumbent Governor of Lagos State is the Grand Patron of the Club while His Royal Majesty, the Oba of Lagos is the Patron of the Club. The impressive progress of The City Club, Lagos is continuous as the Club is now embarking on the erection of a State - of - the - art Marquee to function as an Event Centre while the restructuring of the Club House to house modern Event Center, Members meeting Hall, Committee Room, Administrative Office as well as indoor/Recreation Centre is being vigorously pursued.
